Hot Social Networking Apps for iPad and iPhone

Social networking is a big part of Web 2.0 – accounting for more than an estimated 23% of peoples’ online activity on a daily basis.  Sites like Facebook have even catapulted gaming into the social network arena, with hits like Zynga’s Farmville blazing trails into new territories.  Location based services play an increasing role in apps designed to let people hook up on the go, such as when attending large events in the same city, or finding restaurants and movies to converge on.  The technology seems to change fast, so today, I’ll be listing several of the current top social networking apps for iPad and iPhone, with a brief description of what they can do for you.

FriendCaster for Facebook –  This app is touted as the best Facebook app for iPad, since it was designed with iPad’s native features in mind.  It allows you interact with Facebook as never before, with exlusive FriendStream mode, full screen photo viewing, and quick switching between accounts.

Tumbletail lite for Tumblr – A client for the popular blogging site, Tumblr, this app features thumbnail display for photos, listing for Quotes or Texts, easy Reblog or Like, Follow/Unfollow, and post to Twitter.  You can also save files and documents to Dropbox or Evernote.

Footprints—Ever wanted the added safety of being able to quickly find out the location of a friend or family member, when texting or a call is not an option?  Footprints lets you and your favorite people track each other in real time.  Another use of this is managers who need to track employees in the field.    After the initial trial subscription period, you can buy extra time for cheap – at only $2.99 per year.

Smileys – This does just what it says:  it adds more than 460 symbols to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.  The smileys and other symbols can then be used in SMS, email, calendar, alarms, notes, folder names, and more.  And really, you can’t have too many smileys, can you?

Indy Java – Have you ever wanted to impress your friend or coworkers by taking them someplace real for coffee, instead of always resorting to Starbucks?  Indy Java is the anything-but-Starbucks coffee finder app with location based features that will have you enjoying a nearby independent coffee house (or ICH) before you can say “mochachino.”

TAPU browser – Compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, TAPU adds a feature called Social Scanning to its basic browser.  With it, you tap a Magnifying Glass icon that reveals links shared by others to give you a better idea of what it trending on a particular website.  There is also a Facebook plugin with a Magic Wheel that lets you instantly share links.

FastTweet – And finally, FastTweet is an excellent app for people who want Twitter on mobile devices to be simple again.  All this app does is open a plain, basic text box with a button that says “Tweet it” underneath.  It literally just lets you post quick Tweets!  Innovative.

These are just some of the hottest and latest Social Networking apps from Apple’s App Store.  I hope you’ll enjoy trying a few of them out.  As for me, time for Indy Java!
